A Bedroom

Belgrade during the war in the nineteen nineties. In an early morning, people hurrying to their jobs through Tasmajdan Park are surprised by an unusual scene: baby bodices have been neatly spread over one of the park benches in order to dry, and behind the massive pillars on the Southern side of St. Marko’s church, one can actually see a bedroom. A mattress has been put by the decorative stone of the church wall, and a young couple with a baby sleeps on it, covered with some rather dirty quilts.

The next morning, they are still there. The scene is alive and real. The man sleeps. His feet in dark socks are spread out from the quilt, and his head, with the mouth wide open, is twisted backwards in deep sleep. The woman is awakened. She sits on the mattress with her back supported by the church wall and holds the baby on her lap. The baby wears a red hat. The woman rocks it on her knees with a joyful smile.
